ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has converted the death sentence of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh to life in prison and also ordered his release, as Singh has already spent 21 years on death row in Pakistani prisons.
The Law Ministry has sent a summary to the Interior Ministry for the immediate release of Singh, sources said.
Reacting to the Pakistan's gesture, the Indian government thanked Islamabad for its decision to release Sarabjit Singh.
Singh had been sentenced to death after he was convicted for his involvement in the 1990 Multan and Lahore bomb attacks. He is currently imprisoned in the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore.
The family of Singh had appealed to President Zardari for his release during the president's visit to India.
