ایک دن علامہ اقبال سے ان کے ایک دوست ملنےآئے۔ کیا دیکھتے ہیں کہ علامہ بیٹھے رو رہے ہیں۔ انھوں نے فوراً آگے بڑھ کر دلاسا دیا، چپ کرایا اور رونے کا سبب دریافت کیا۔ اس پر علامہ نے ان کی طرف ایک خط بڑھا دیا جو کیمبرج یونیورسٹی لندن کے ایک پروفیسر نے علامہ کو لکھا تھا۔ اس خط میں پروفیسر موصوف نے علامہ کی کسی فارسی کتاب کا انگریزی زبان میں ترجمہ کرنے کی اجازت مانگی تھی۔
علامہ اقبال کے دوست خط پڑھ کر خوش بھی ہوئے اور حیران بھی، اور اسی حیرت و محویت کےعالم میں کہنے لگے کہ "آپ کو تو خوش ہونا چاہیئے تھا کہ غیر اقوام بھی آپ کے کلام کی نہ صرف قدر کرتی ہیں بلکہ اپنی قوم کے نوجوانوں تک بھی آپ کا پیغام پہنچانا چاہتی ہیں"!
اس پر علامہ نے فرمایا "اسی بات کا تو رونا ہے کہ جس قوم کے مرض کا علاج اور درد کا درماں کرنے کے لئے میں نے یہ کتاب لکھی ہے، وہ پوری طرح میرا مطلب اخذ کر سکی اور نہ اس کی قدر کر سکی اور اس کے برعکس ولایت کے پروفیسر میرا پیغامِ خودی اپنی قوم کے جوانوں تک پہنچانا چاہتے ہیں حالانکہ یہ کتاب میں نے ان کے لئے نہیں لکھی"
