Burj Khalifa in Dubai is not only the world's tallest building but the world's tallest building by some 1,000 feet. At 2,717 feet (828 metres) tall, it is the height of the previous highest skyscraper, Taipei 101 in Taiwan, with the Eiffel Tower perched on top
Taipei 101 was the tallest skyscraper in the world when it was completed in 2004. It stands 509 metres (1,671 feet) high and, as its name suggests, has 101 floors
The Shanghai World Financial Centre (left) and the Jin Mao Tower (right) are currently the world's third and ninth tallest buildings repectively. The former is 492 metres (1,614 feet) high and has 101 storeys. It houses the world's highest hotel rooms
The International Commerce Centre, or ICC Tower, in Hong Kong, has 118 floors and stands 484 metres (1,590 feet) high, making it the world's fourth tallest building.
The Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, are both 452 metres (1,483 feet) high and have 88 storeys, making them the world's fifth tallest skyscrapers
Nanjing Greenland Financial Centre (also known as the Zifeng tower) in Nanjing, China, is 450 metres (1,476 feet) high and has 89 storeys
Chicago's Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower) is the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere, at 442 metres (1,450 feet)
Kingkey 100 is currently under construction in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, China. It has reached its final height of 441.8 metres (1,449 ft) and has 100 floors
The Guangzhou West Tower was topped out at the end of 2008 at 440.2 metres (1,444 feet) high, rounding off our list of the world's tallest skyscrapers.
Burj Khalifa is now the tallest man-made structure of any kind ever built, beating the KVLY TV mast in Blanchard, North Dakota, which is 628.8 metres (2,063 feet) high
The mast in Blanchard, North Dakota has been superseded by Tokyo Sky Tree. It is not yet completed, but has reached its full height of 634.0 metres (2,080 ft), making it the second tallest structure in the world, after Burj Khalifa in Dubai
The Canton Tower (also known as the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower) was topped-out in 2009 at 610 metres (2,001 feet). It briefly held the title of tallest completed tower in the world, before being surpassed by Tokyo Sky Tree in 2011
The CN Tower in Toronto is the tallest free-standing structure in the western hemisphere at 553 metres (1,815 feet)
Abraj Al Bait Towers in Mecca holds the records for the world's tallest clock tower and the world's tallest hotel, as well as the world's biggest clock face. When finished, it will be the second tallest building in the world, standing 601 metres (1,972 feet) high
The City of Capitals in Moscow has become Europe's tallest building, surpassing the Naberezhnaya Tower (also in Moscow). It is 299.9 metres (948 feet) high
Shard London Bridge will be the tallest building in the European Union and the 45th tallest building in the world when it is completed next year. It will stand 1,017 ft (310 m) tall and have 72 floors
The tallest free-standing structure in Britain is the Emley Moor transmitter near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. It stands 330.4 metres (1,084 feet) high
The Great Pyramid of Giza was the tallest man-made structure in the world for nearly 4,000 years
